Outdoor Education Class

On January 14, 2016, Mr. Eric Thompson's new Outdoor Education classes took to the back portion of the middle school-high school property to learn how to snowshoe and discover one of the earliest established ways of traveling during winter. Mr. Thompson's classes have learned how to build survival structures to protect them from the elements, utilize various resources in the outdoors, use items like paracord, and how to build a fire for heat and cooking.

The class is a one semester elective course for all sixth and seventh grade students. One section will be added to the high school curriculum for second semester, which starts on January 25.

Other areas of study have included archery and fly-tying.

According to superintendent Matt Lukshaitis, "The class is doing just what we wanted it to do--excite students about living in Northern Michigan and giving our students skills they can use for a lifetime while studying the local environment and caring for the ecological systems which are a part of our natural world. Mr. Thompson is doing great things with our Pine River students."
